Face Fit Testing checks that a specific model and size of a tight fitting face piece (mask) seals adequately to the wearer’s face, thereby giving them the protection they need. There are many different types of masks so it is important to ensure the correct one is selected.
What can we Face Fit Test?
Tests are carried out using the qualitative method so we can fit test any tight fitting face piece (half mask) whether re-usable or disposable. Full face masks and loose fitting masks /face coverings cannot be tested using this method.
What are the benefits of testing?
The test gives the employer and the wearer the assurance of protection against the identified hazard (e.g. dusts, vapours, viruses) from a correctly fitted mask.
How is the Face Fit Test conducted?
The wearer is “screened” by the insertion of an aerosol into a hood to ensure they can detect the taste. The wearer then puts the mask on and a test solution is inserted into the hood whilst the wearer undergoes various movements. If the solution cannot be tasted the face piece is deemed to fit. Each test takes around 20 minutes.

Why should I use Foley and Baugh’s Face Fit Testing service?

Instructions to persons undergoing a Face Fit Test with Foley and Baugh
- You must be clean shaven in the area where the mask seals.
- You must not eat, drink (except water) smoke or chew gum in the 30 minutes prior to the test.
- You must bring the mask and any spectacles or other personal protective equipment worn at the same time as the mask which may compromise the fit (i.e. goggles, ear defenders, hard hat) with you to the fitting.
